Why Take a Break? Vacation Makes You Happy

take a break vacation

Greetings from Hilton Head Island, SC. We decided to take a break and vacation this week at HHI. As you can see, mother nature and the weather gods are shining on us.

On Thursdays I usually post a blog with ideas to help you and me get better and smarter and progress in our careers. Today’s blog post does exactly that.

We Americans tend to work ourselves to the bone. Too many of us feel we’re not doing enough unless we’re exhausted. How stupid is that?

It took my husband and me two days to decompress to actually relax on this vacation. How stupid is that?

I’ve always felt the vacation system in the US is upside down. Young people get a week or two of vacation per year at most. Younger employees are usually chomping at the bit to get time off. Give them the time and they will happily take it. They aren’t yet weighed down with multiple demands from work.

Older, longer-term employees get multiple weeks of vacation. The older workers, though, usually don’t take all their vacation because it takes them two weeks to prepare for a week off. They have too many meetings, too many responsibilities.

Wherever you are in your career, commit to taking at least one week off per year. I’ve got to go now. I’m not supposed to be working. I’m on vacation.
