Here in the US, we just celebrated Memorial Day, and that means it is the unofficial start of summer! What a joyful time!
If you’re like many families, your van is packed to the max with swimming gear, beach chairs, big umbrellas, and the little fancy ones that the adults savor. The cooler is there, along with enough food to feed a few armies. And you remembered the dog! Good job!
Or maybe you’ve wedged your beach clothes or mountain gear into suitcases that don’t quite fit in the overhead bin. That’s always fun–not.
Summer is supposed to be a special time, a time to bond. Just like with this young boy and his dad at the beach. That picture brings joy to my heart–really.
But sometimes summer just doesn’t go like that. Sometimes life gets in the way.
Let’s pivot from the beach to the corner office. The executive suite. Here, joy often feels more elusive, you might even wonder “does joy even have a place in our work lives?” Our days are often spent on the mundane; working with spreadsheets, taking meetings, and getting through our to-do lists one task at a time.
And, more and more lately, we are called upon to navigate an increasingly complex and turbulent world; navigating market downturns, spearheading complex transformations, managing and supporting our teams, or grappling with the profound responsibility of shaping an organizational legacy that will endure beyond your own tenure.
These aren’t the moments where joy naturally “jumps” into our laps. Often, they’re the “burning rubber” moments of the business world – the unexpected crisis, the critical talent departure, the complex strategic pivot that sends ripples of uncertainty through your organization.
These realities demand quick thinking, strong resolve, and often, a hefty dose of grit.
What if “executive joy” is something you actively cultivate, even within these challenging realities?
What if finding joy now, as an executive or as a team member, lies not in the absence of problems, but in the mastery of finding strength, progress, and even profound satisfaction in navigating them. It’s a different kind of joy – one forged in resilience, strategic foresight, and in savoring the wins, both big and small.
Here are a few ways that we can embrace joy at work.
The Joy of Reframing Challenges: When a crisis hits, it’s easy to be consumed by the problem. But the executive who finds joy in the journey sees it as an opportunity – to innovate, to strengthen team bonds, or to refine their own leadership style under pressure. It’s the satisfaction of turning a “burning rubber” moment into a lesson learned and a path forward.
The Joy of Empowering Your Team: One of the deepest satisfactions for a leader is watching their team grow, adapt, and succeed. The joy here comes from mentoring emerging talent, developing strong management, and seeing your people rise to meet challenges, creating a more resilient and self-sufficient organization. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve built a foundation of capable leaders.
The Joy of Purpose-Driven Leadership: Beyond the numbers, what truly drives you? For many CEOs, it’s the impact – on employees, customers, and the broader community. Rediscovering and leaning into that core purpose, even in the midst of difficult decisions, can ignite a powerful sense of joy and meaning in your work.
The Joy of a Confident Legacy (and Retirement): This is perhaps one of the most significant and often overlooked sources of executive joy. For many, the idea of stepping back can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Imagine the deep satisfaction of knowing you’ve not just built a successful company, but you’ve also cultivated a strong management team capable of taking the reins, ensuring the company’s future vitality. The joy comes from planning thoughtfully, developing your successors, and creating a seamless transition that allows you to embrace your next chapter with confidence and peace of mind. It’s the ultimate expression of your leadership style – leaving a thriving enterprise in capable hands.
