It’s Friday Fun Time. Check Out These Facts About the Wonders Around Us

Sometimes on Fridays my mind wanders, and I take time to reflect on the wonders of this world. Taking time to actually observe nature can be great fun. I hope your Friday gets a tad better with these tidbits of info.

You know, of course, that here at MentorLoft our goal is to help you grow, get smarter, and all that. It’s OK for that learning to be fun, engaging, and odd. With that said, check out today’s Friday Fun Facts.

An unappreciated engineer

You probably know I love working with engineers. However, I draw the line at the critter nicknamed nature’s littlest sanitation engineer.

When our kids were in grade school, our daughter became fixated on a certain critter for a school project—opossums. Our young scientist’s fixation came from her observations that lots of opossums get hit and killed by cars. “What do opossums do, Mom? Besides get killed.”

A opossum’s job is to eat anything they find—carcasses, live critters, garbage, and skeletons, for starts. And I bet you didn’t know they have 50 very sharp teeth. And—get ready for it—they do “play possum.” Learn more here. Astonish your child or your boss with your wisdom.

Is an Asian Tiger zooming in on you?

I am convinced that mosquitoes like me better than anyone else around me. For the last year or two in Georgia, we have been besieged by a new type of mosquito that goes hunting for its prey—me and maybe you.

In 2021, the North Georgia Health District posted a warning about Asian Tiger Mosquitoes. Read this carefully. “If you have been pursued and bitten by one, you know why they are called tiger mosquitoes. They will follow you inside your home in search of human blood.”

They also will bite you several times in one location. It’s like they find a good food supply – me or you –and keep coming back for more.  I recently got attacked by an Asian Tiger Mosquito while preparing for a Zoom call. Within a matter of minutes, I got at least 5 bites on my neck. Maybe the Asian Tiger Mosquito had really had enough of Zoom? Just saying.

If you want more info, CDC has numerous articles on these suckers, including all the diseases they carry. Also check out the fun poll to test your knowledge of Chikungunya, the disease or condition of the week, brought to you by CDC. How can you resist?

It’s your turn now

If you really want to help, share some wonder you’ve come across recently. I’ll include it in upcoming Friday Fun Time blogs. And thanks a bunch for reading. Let’s put the FUN back into Friday!
