Spreading Joy And Hope One Person At A Time: Who Can You Bring Joy To Today?

Spreading Joy And Hope One Person At A Time: Who Can You Bring Joy To Today?

The Super Bowl is over. It wasn’t pretty if you’re a Chiefs fan. Eagles 40, Chiefs 22.

Imagine what it was like for this young man. I don’t know his name, but I’m going to call him Jordan.

He grew up in Kansas City Chiefs territory. It was KC everything. Everyone was pulling for the Chiefs.

Except for Jordan.

Jordan was rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles. And he lived in Chiefs land.

I forgot to mention that Jordan was 10 years old.

Can you imagine the harassment this young Eagles fan took from everybody before the game?

Can you imagine how crazy happy he was when he was proven right? The Eagles buried the Chiefs. And 10-year-old Jordan won.

I wish I could have seen it. That’s not all to this story, though.

I learned about Jordan from his mom. She works for a federal agency that is often abused by the people who call in for help.

I made it a point to ask her name “so I can thank you,” I told her. She apologized for the delay in getting the info I needed. I told her I was killing time watching the Super Bowl commercials.

She dug into the problem I called about, and she fixed things.

When we were done, I thanked her by name and wished her well. I told her I hoped I’d been able to put a smile on her face.

To my surprise, she didn’t hang up right away. She asked me which team I had been rooting for. I was pretty much on the fence, I said. I just wanted a good game.

Then she told me about her 10-year-old son who was willing to stand out and be proud.

She put a big smile on my face and left an impression of a young man who’s going places.

She brought me joy.

Who can you bring joy to today?

Have you ever wondered why we stop to watch the orange glow that arrives before sunset, or why we flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring? Is there a reason that people—regardless of gender, age, culture, or ethnicity—are mesmerized by baby animals, and can’t help but smile when they see a burst of confetti or a cluster of colorful balloons?

We are often made to feel that the physical world has little or no impact on our inner joy. Increasingly, experts urge us to find balance and calm by looking inward—through mindfulness or meditation—and muting the outside world. But what if the natural vibrancy of our surroundings is actually our most renewable and easily accessible source of joy?

In Joyful, designer Ingrid Fetell Lee explores how the seemingly mundane spaces and objects we interact with every day have surprising and powerful effects on our mood. Drawing on insights from neuroscience and psychology, she explains why one setting makes us feel anxious or competitive, while another fosters acceptance and delight—and, most importantly, she reveals how we can harness the power of our surroundings to live fuller, healthier, and truly joyful lives.
