Welcome to 2025. Are you getting giddy about all the wonderful things that are sure to arise in your next few months? Or do you pooh-pooh the whole idea of setting goals?
A lot of the folks I work with are dealing with having to set SMART goals and goals for all kinds of things and people in their lives. That is hard work. I know first-hand. [In case you’ve missed out on setting SMART goals, check out this worksheet that will help.]
As I thought about 2025, I decided to shift my focus away from SMART goals and focus on positive things that can bring sparkly stuff to my world. The past two years have been tough ones for my family. Our approach to that has been to look at the good that’s out there. It has helped us deal with our reality.
So I made a list of words that have helped us. Maybe they can help you, too, if you need to “look at the bright side of light” (written by Eric Idle of Monty Python fame). My husband loved Monty Python; it was what we watched on our first date, accompanied by cold pizza and warm beer.
See if any of these words–even just one–touch you. Then wrap your arms around it and enjoy. Maybe share it with a friend or a new friend you haven’t even met yet!
Keep the list handy. You never know when you could enjoy the bright side of life on a cloudy day. If you’re not familiar with the song by Eric Idle, check it out here. It’s fun.

From the publisher:
When it comes to work these days, we’re expected to do more with less. But is this nose-to-the-grindstone philosophy the best way to run a business? Alarmingly low employee engagement numbers indicate otherwise. So, if pushing everyone harder isn’t the path to productivity, what is?
Supported by the latest research, this eye-opening book argues that our best work is the product of a positive environment. That’s good news for you as a manager. While you can’t personally transform the corporate culture, you can influence the workplace climate and create meaningful and lasting change.
